Wow. Went down the rabbit-hole: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hadhramaut

Mud, eight story structure, built in late 1700s. Apparently, it was restored in 2003 and turned into a hotel. For some reason they decided to paint the exterior.

The paint appears to be part of the restoration. You can make out the faded colors in the pre-restoration photos.

People don’t usually realize many historical buildings in that area were painted.

and importantly, as the photo shows, hilariously absurdly gaudily painted.
I think it’s a quite modern thing to consider subdued colour more tasteful, for most of history it was fairly difficult to get your hands on strong bright colourful pigments, so you wanted to show it off.

Look at Charglemagne & Co. here, everyone but the two monks look like they’re wearing fancy curtains.

It’s too nice, when is Israel going to bomb it?

It’s a hotel now, so probably the next journalist’s convention?

I want to climb it, assassin’s creed style!

I see some footholds, but I wouldn’t.
