This is probably one of my most cliche works ever, yet I’m still attached to it. It’s simple, calming, exactly what people expect, and with a touch of red saturation to bring out the roofs. It’ll get hung in a dentist’s office where it will absolutely fail to soothe a small child.
Standing there on a very thin land bridge, with two lanes of traffic, shooting out over the bay to catch this bridge, composed just so. The wind was so strong I almost lost my camera!
What are these two bands in the sky? The more commonly seen band is on the left and is the central band of our Milky Way galaxy. Our Sun orbits in the disk of this spiral galaxy so that from inside, it appears as a band of comparable brightness all the way around the sky. The less commonly seen band, on the right, is zodiacal light – sunlight reflected from dust orbiting the Sun in our Solar System. Zodiacal light is brightest near the Sun and so is best seen just before sunrise or just after sunset. On some evenings, this ribbon of zodiacal light can appear quite prominent. It was discovered only in this century that zodiacal dust was mostly expelled by comets that have passed near Jupiter. The featured image was captured about a year ago from the Atacama Desert in Chile.
An arbitrary fast fire shot before I crossed the street created the second-best picture I’ve taken this year. So moody, so good, Gregory Crewdson himself would say “hey, get your own schtick.”
The Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C. commemorates the third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson (April 13, 1743 – July 4, 1826). Today marks the 200th anniversary of Jefferson’s death as well as the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, drafted primarily by Jefferson.
I was wondering if anyone has experienced this before / has ideas on possible solutions? The camera in question is a Minolta Maxxum 9 (known as the a9 or Dynax 9 in some regions). Im trying to determine why the viewfinder has the dots on it now after a backcountry trip I took — my only theory is the rapid humidity changes that happened due to some extreme weather we were having introduced moisture inside the viewfinder’s screen apparatus (not the mirror mechanism / lens)
The western front of the northern historic old town on Salinenstrasse, seen from the north-northwest over the River Kocher. On the left in the picture is the south wing (Salinenstrasse 6) of the former correctional facility, built between 1843 and 1849, popularly known as the ‘Kocherhotel’. In the center of the picture is the striking ‘thief’s tower’, built around 1300 as a corner tower of the city fortifications; on the left and right directly behind it is the former stables and armory (Salinenstrasse 2, orange plaster), which is adjoined by another part on the right (Am Spitalbach 22, white plaster). Other historical buildings follow: Am Spitalbach 31 as well as Neue Strasse 32 and 33, Brückenhof 1, which are apparently not listed, but enjoy ensemble protection. On the right is the Henkersbrücke, which is of course a protected cultural monument. In the foreground is the Kocher weir with a fish ladder (right).
I tried so hard to get exactly the right focus to bring out as much detail in her as possible. And yet, she was patient and maintained her pose the whole time!
Crater Lake is a volcanic crater lake in southern Oregon, formed around 7,700 years ago after the collapse of Mount Mazama. It is the deepest lake in the United States, with a maximum depth of 1,949 feet (594 m). Sacred to the Klamath people, who call it Giiwas, Crater Lake is the centerpiece of Crater Lake National Park and has a deep blue color and exceptional water clarity. It has no inflow or outflow, the waters being replaced every 150 years through evaporation, rain and snowfall. Its best-known landmarks include Wizard Island and Phantom Ship, while the surrounding park offers hiking, fishing and winter recreation.
Inside this warehouse, with its violently red windows, is where I tell my weekly quiz to an audience of all-comers. (That said, this isn’t about the quiz so I won’t be giving information on that here.)
For most of my photography career, I just kind of accepted that because I saw the world in color, and that was the way it had to be. The world was in color, and to be faithful to the notions of the world, the resulting art had to be in color just as well.
A few days back, I wondered if I could achieve focus stacking doing the macro rock-your-camera-to-focus trick. For the uninitiated, the idea is that slight movement of your camera toward and/or away from your subject is an easier focusing method than using the focus ring on your lens.
They got the fuzzy antlers going, and turns out there’s like twenty or thirty deer up in the hills in Astoria there, and they absolutely do not care about humans. I got these shots with a telephoto, 800 ISO, 1/2000th of a second, 300mm. And they just munched some church grass.
The iconic Dzhuguturlyuchat mountain massif with glacier. The area is mostly below 4000 m. a. s. l. but technically difficult to explore and navigate through rough terrain, snow and glacial activity.
Taken from the Women’s Forum, spanning out over a bit of a valley, and overlooking the gorge, the Vista House can be seen in the distance. I’ve always loved the topography and geography of the Gorge, it’s so beautiful.
In a cosmic vista you can never see, the Milky Way arcs through the night above Seoul, South Korea. Remarkably, this urban night skyscape reveals our galaxy’s faintly luminous central region and dark obscuring dust clouds in spite of the brilliant city lights. To overcome the extreme light pollution of the metropolitan area and record faint cosmic details, an infrared filter was used to capture the night scene in a single exposure. While the filter transmits predominately infrared light, it still passes some visible light to give the scene a natural appearance. The view is from Seoul’s Ttukseom Hangang Park, with the Han River and a well lit railway bridge across the foreground. The 123 story Lotte World Tower looms in the distance, the tallest building in South Korea.
The Sun has just set… in the opposite side of the sky. Pictured here are anticrepuscular rays apparently converging in the east in this image of the limestone plateau in the heart of the Hyblaean Mountains of southeastern Sicily, in Italy. How were these anticrepuscular rays formed, if the Sun wasn’t there? After the Sun set (in the west, as usual) its light still illuminated a cloud higher up in the sky. Partially blocked by the cloud, the sunlight produced patterns of light and shadow, crossing the sky in parallel lines. Perspective makes it look like they converge in the east, in the same way that train tracks appear to meet in the distance. This effect can also happen at sunrise, only the directions are exchanged. In rare cases, both crepuscular and anticrepuscular rays can be seen at the same time.
Also known as the Taktsang Palphug Monastery and the Tiger’s Nest, it is located in the cliffside of a mountain, around a cave where Guru Padmasambhava is believed to have meditated and practiced Vajrayana Buddhism in the early 9th century. The monastery was built in 1692 by 4th Druk Desi Tenzin Rabgey.
HMCS St. John’s is a Halifax-class frigate of the Royal Canadian Navy. She was commissioned on 24 June 1996 and is the first ship named after the city of St. John’s in Newfoundland and Labrador. On my drive back from Bend, I looked out to the left, expecting to see some mountains, and instead I got to see art! I ended up pulling the car over right there and then on a deserted stretch of highway. I actually did that a lot on the return trip, and I think it took me an hour longer to get home than it did to get out there. There’s just so much art to be made, you know?
