Hi there!

As the title says, I’m looking for a plug that can measure power consumption, but does not even have a relay to power it on or off. I want it always to be on. The reason is that I’m tired of my smart plugs randomly turning off for no reason, even after I’ve updated them to the latest firmware version. Heck, I even have an automation in Home Assistant that turns them on again when it happens. I don’t even know if what I’m looking for does even exist. I’ve been looking around and haven’t found anything like it. If any of you fine folks know, please shout!

I have an outlet in my bathroom that’s above and to the left of my sink and I’m wondering if it would be safe enough to use some of those third reality plugs in it.

Should I put my smart plugs into the consumption section or the individual devices section on the energy dashboard?

I have been running HA on a Pi3b for a few years. It’s been a bit flakey the last few months so I’m looking to upgrade to a Pi5. After the replacement I expect to add more items and maybe phase out the Insteon for more Z-Wave.

I have an Inovelli White Series Matter+Thread light switch. It has a custom button called Config that you can use for automations. Config is listed under Events in Device Info. I’ve noticed some unexpected behavior whenever I run sudo docker compose restart.

I have my old Surface Pro 4 I want to use as a google home like front end and eventually for voice control. I have CachyOS/Arch installed on it, but all the front ends I found seem to require ubuntu/debian and are made exclusively for raspberry pi touch screens.

We aren’t too fond of cameras around here and there’s almost always someone home so it’s not really a necessity for us. Having said that, we’ve had a few cams for a while now and most important is the doorbell.

I’ve got a cheap salt lamp with a LED inside and it runs on a 5V wall wart. I think it originally had a USB plug but I cut that off and connected it to an old 5V power supply.

A rain sensor just tells you if it’s raining or not. A rain gauge will give you cumulative rainfall values. I know there are DIY projects to make HA-compatible gauges but I’d rather have something out of the box, at least in terms of hardware.

Ubiquiti is pretty good about HA integration, so I decided to take a chance buying one of their new line of sensors. It’s a door/window sensor that also senses motion, light, temperature, humidity, and (somehow) leaks.

It would seem logical to name them for where they are and what they do. “Bathroom motion sensor”, “Bedroom lamp”, etc. However, I’ve found that, if it can move, it ends up moving sooner or later. My “bathroom” motion sensor is now in the upstairs family room, for example.

Moved into my own house again recently. I would like to get a lot of stuff automated like I had in my previous house.

Another noob question: see the attached image of my thermostat. Would it be possible to switch it for a smart one? What would I have to check? If it is possible, what would you recommend? If is don’t want any 3rd party app or account?

I’m looking for a minimalistic layout to control and see the status of blinds in the overview dashboard.

I have had around a dozen smart bulbs/switches/plugs from three companies for 5-10 years now. Globe Suite, Meross, and ‘C by GE’ (General Electric). All three are dependent on their respective cloud services, and are integrated with Google Home. (I know, I know…. It’s time to dump this crap, it’s why I’m here) Globe Suite has been great tbh, but ‘C by GE’ is absolute trash, and one of the two Meross devices have now died, prompting a long awaited change.

Hi. I’m currently rebuilding my setup from scratch, moving away from my old Pi. What’s best practice these days? How would you do it? What cards are the best for the dashboard? How would you do presence detection (getting home), mqtt via ha, or stand alone?

Partly because of your help, I now have a pretty decent HA set-up with lights and motion sensors. I was wondering if I could again pick your brain/ experience with the next step I need to take: add a camera.

I am a dabbler in home automation and thinking about starting to get into lighting. I have heard mostly good things about the Philip Hue line and wanted to see what peoples thoughts are about it.

At my insistence we bought a Canon laser all in one printer in 2022. It’s turning out to be more trouble than it’s worth, and it can’t do some stuff that some family members need, like printing on thick card stock.

I wasn’t a fan of HACS making a github account a requirement.

A while back I played a round with the HASS Voice Assistant, and pretty easily got to a point where STT and TTS were working really well on my local installation. Also got the hardware to build wyoming satellites with wakeword recognition.

I’m just bought an Airgradient air quality sensor (actually two, an indoor and an outdoor).

Anyone do this with success? I tried setting it up on TN Scale and couldn’t discover any devices. After some digging it sounds like that’s a common occurrence.

I’ve been using the same Raspberry Pi 4 to host HA for years. It’s worked well enough, but I worry about the stability of the SD card. I’m no stranger to cards that fail suddenly. Had one fail on another Pi just yesterday.

First, I have a Kwikset Homeconnect 620 deadbolt. It locks and unlocks fine. I can add codes via the keypad itself but the manual recommends using the smart home hub the lock is paired with, which is HA of course.

First thing I do when I get a smart appliance is scan it with nmap. This has revealed some interesting Easter eggs, like my Davis instruments air quality sensors having a local REST API.

Been using tp-link smart plugs for a moment. Not really had any problems with them but i want to move to something such as z-wave or a ZigBee. Something that is totally local and does not require a different app on my phone.

I recently sold my house that had some Nest cameras which I was very happy with. I’m closing on a new place and had planned to get new Nest cameras for it, but this morning I received an email from Google with the following text. I don’t want AI integration for my cameras, so will be looking for a different solution.

Currently, I have an automation that turns on my air conditioner for 37 minutes, every 3 hours. However, during that time, I cannot do anything like update, HAOS, etc. Because it breaks the timer, and then I have to manually shut it off.

The sensor i have let’s you set zones which work width wise but not height. What i would like to do, if able, is mount the sensor waist height or a little higher and block the top and bottom of the sensor so i only have the middle 20° being used. Can this be done with foil or metal?

Just wondered if anyone on here is using a HA compatible one. Zigbee or Z-Wave would be fine. Unfortunately, the controllers I got with the main control unit are Heatmiser. They use Zigbee, but the manufacturer’s own implementation which requires buying and running a proprietary hub (and sod that!) Rather annoyingly, the controllers are pretty functional! The manifold wiring centre itself (UH4) just works by connecting 240v lines, so shouldn’t be too hard to have HA connecting the right loops at the right time.

I have a dishwasher that does not open automatically when finished. I can detect when it is finished through a power adapter, but need to open it somehow. Any tips? Is fingerbot strong enough?

It offers to create an AI agent I can save (not sure proper wording, not English native) mainly to help me maintaining, fixing or creating some automations, dashboard items, ... To do so I need a prompt that will tell exactly how it should react but since i never really dig into AI yet, I'm looking for some guidance to set it up correctly

I have an automation that when triggered turns on a scene that sets my lights a specific way. Then the automation waits for a second trigger.

I'm looking into adding a video doorbell and some security cameras and want to integrate with HA. I have some cameras that came with the house, but I don't think they will work. The system has been discontinued and I don't have the "base unit" that connects them. If there is a way to use them, I'd be happy to find out if they are operational and use them. Web search has not helped.

I've been using an Amazon tablet with Fully Kiosk for a few months but it frankly sucks ass. Keeps resetting itself or kicking back to the Amazon home screen to name a few issues.

In the office we have an automation system that talks in modbus. Right now I have Node Red that receives data from modbus (via IP), sends it to MQTT and send messages from MQTT to modbus. In HA I have 15 MQTT climates that works. I want to bypass Node Red; I've added an automation that gets triggered when a MQTT values arrives and sends the new value to mobus:

I've been running a very simple Home Assistant setup for a while now - just a few lights and a door lock. I've added a bit of monitoring and data gathering basically to see how MQTT works.

I've got an IKEA Tradfri LED driver and a Rodret dimmer. When I first installed them I thought it would be good to also control some non-IKEA pendant lights with the same dimmer, in sync with the cabinet lights connected to the Tradfri - so, I created automations in Home Assistant corresponding to each of the actions the dimmer can perform and this is working fine. However, we've decided not to control the pendant lights in sync with the cabinet lights so it's now unnecessarily complicated. I plan to remove the automations and link the Rodret direct to the Tradfri again.

I lost my esphome config in HA. I have several devices (sonoff S31) that show up in HA asking for encryption keys when I try to add them, which I don't have as old HA vm is gone. Is there anyway to reset them to base esphome config without disassembling and reflashing esphome? From what I can tell googling this, the answer is no, but thought I'd ask before I go ahead with that plan.

I built a new house last year and moved in this January. This is my first time living in a house that's air tight enough to have an air exchanger. Through the winter it was fine - I just left it run its own Eco mode and everything seemed good. I'm finding spring really frustrating though - most days are nice and warm and we open windows, most nights are cool and we close the windows. I don't like wasting electricity by running the air exchanger all day when the windows are open.

Hi, I used to monitor my Car Charging using a Shelly Plug S but now it's dead and I want to replace it. How do I swap it out so that it's continuing the work of it's predecessor? I want to have it neat.

I would like to start using floorplans/maps with various device actions on them. This means I need locally stored images, that can be seen over the network. I managed to upload images to HA, but as they need to be accessed with a token, I either need to refresh the token every day (no), or have an image with a long-lived token (also not a good idea).

I've been running Home Assistant for about a year now and always installed every update as soon as it's released and never had any issues at all.

I've got several Amcrest cameras connected through Frigate (running standalone) to HA but I'm not sure how to properly setup the camera card so that the 'thumbnail' shown on the dashboard cards refreshes every so often.

This isn't specifically Home Assistant, but so many people seem to be using Frigate with Home Assistant it feels close enough.

I recently setup my ZigBee network in Home Assistant, using a Conbee III with deConz on my Synology NAS.

I have recently setup a reverse proxy with the nginx addon for my home assistant server. Everything works well with the exception of the local calender integration. For whatever reason it throws an error "Could not retrieve events for calendars: <calander name>" when connecting through the external URL. I also get a failed login attempt but only if I open the calender tab.

As I'm currently doing a re-wire, it's a great opportunity for me to put some metering in the house. I'm single-phase, but I plan to monitor multiple sections of the house, which are each wired for 100A independently.

I am using the teslemetry integration to dynamically adjust my charging amps to match the surplus production from my solar panels. I have an automation that checks surplus production every 2min and adjust amps only if needed.
